California Sister, butterfly for June.

Hello and happy June! from the cloudy and cool Pacific NW.

We're based in Renton, WA, for the time being, helping family with move in and grand baby, so fun!

I've managed some exploring trips to find local quilt and sewing shops. About 10 minutes south of here, in old town Kent, WA Running Stitch Fabrics

has a quilt shop with great fabrics and lots of classes to choose from. I'll be back to visit often.

Old town Kent, WA , south of Seattle, has some interesting history. One of the old settlers on arriving thought the area looked like his home town Kent, England and so the name Kent stuck. Logging and agriculture were the first big industries. My husband and I know this area well having grown up in and around here.

The California Sister butterfly is featured for June in my butterfly calendar.

Their host plant is the California Live Oak. Viewing them from the top their wings are dark brown to black with two orange spots on the tips. Looking from the under side you'll see the yellow spot and blue come out. They're common and not endangered.

Hello, from Renton, Washington!

Where it's sunny and warm. The land of lakes, wild deer and rabbits.

Last week we went on a road trip driving from Los Angeles, CA, north to Renton, WA.

We left Tuesday morning and got here Saturday afternoon. These photos cover our overnight stay in Sisters, Oregon. It was a half hour out of the way from Bend, Oregon, but I had to visit the Stitchin' Post Quilt shop.

The Stitchin' Post  shop hosts the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show. I've attended that show several times in the past and even entered a quilt or two. Jean Wells and her daughter Valori run the shop and are busy designing fabric and patterns and having great inspiring classes, wow.  If you're ever able to visit the shop and the town, you will enjoy yourself!

Sisters, Oregon  is a magical place. The smell of sage, the view of volcanoes is intoxicating.

That and the fact that there's a great quilt shop in town make me want to consider living there!

Hello! from, 'Where am I anyway?'

Oh, I know, Renton, WA.

Last week my husband and I took off on a road trip up the west coast, leaving Rancho Palos Verdes; LA, avoiding the big highways when possible, to visit our #2 son and his wife to help with their baby and move into their new house.

We drove to Folsom, CA on hwy 99 the first day, it felt good to be in our home town. We visited relatives and then drove onto Redding, CA the next day and took time to visit the Oroville Dam. The Oroville dam repairs and California Department of Resources updates are one of my hobby/interests.

The next day we drove through the Grass Lake, CA area and got gorgeous views of Mt. Shasta. 

We turned off I-5 at Weed, CA and drove north into central Oregon on hwy 97, coming to La Pine, Oregon. Of course I had to stop at the local quilt shop, Homestead Quilts, link above. It was full of great fabric and inspiration! 

I'll share more of our adventure and photos soon. Now I've got to help out and find the nearest quilt shop, quick!!

The temperature has warmed up and the clouds are still here.

The rabbits can be seen running around on the golf course across the street. I think they're planning on taking over the world, they're reproducing fast!

I finished 'Wedding Ring' block #3 in 'Rest and Refreshing' B.O.W. by Piecing the Past Quilts, link above. The blocks are traditional and beautiful. I did add in my own colorway, however.

Missouri Star Quilt Company has a new tutorial on a,  Nine Patch on Point Quilt. 

Great idea and fun, using Amy Smart's new fabric line 'Gingham Girls. 

No I'm not getting paid to write that. It's a good tutorial and fabric line, no harm in saying what's true.

Happy Mother's Day weekend, spring is a good time to celebrate moms.

Happy Friday from Rancho Palos Verdes!

Where it's overcast but the flowers are blooming and butterflies are fluttering around.

I had to share photos of some of the colors I see on my walks down to and along the Terranea Bluff.

The Bougainvillea is all over blooms. The jasmine blossoms, planted as landscape shrubs, smell heavenly, that's right no photo yet. Then the Matilija Poppies remind me of white skirts blowing around in the breeze. Breath taking for flower lovers.

My block #2 'Woven Time' in the B. O. W. quilt 'Rest and Refreshing' by Piecing the Past, link above, is finished. Obviously I'm not using Civil War reproduction fabrics. I just couldn't bring myself to it with so many tropical colors around me here. I've written down the color inspirations I'm using, some of the colors are avocado, lemon, lime, mango, bougainvillea pink etc. The traditional piecing is a fun challenge. And the 'little sewing machine' runs like a champ.

Hello and happy Wednesday from sunny Rancho Palos Verdes.

This month's calendar butterfly is the Monarch butterfly. 

They are a milkweed butterfly which means they lay their eggs on milkweed plants and eat milkweed plants. They also migrate thousands of miles. We see quite a few of them around here.

I'm adding more rows to my 'Liberated' butterfly quilt/runner. I've decided it's going to be runner size,

approx. 44" x 20". You can see it in the photo above as I was 'interviewing' block arrangement on my 'design' blanket.

My design blanket is my pineapple fleece blanket, it's very cozy in the evening when it gets cool and it doubles as a design 'wall' during the day.

My order from Missouri Star Quilt Comp. came in, fun time. I ordered black and white fabric with butterflies on it by Jennifer Sampou for Robert Kaufman. It's delightful and I do have a weakness for a good butterfly fabric as you might have guessed. I'm putting it to use right away.

She's fun and her machine quilting ideas are great, easy to understand.

I've had time this week to finish the first block in Piecing the Past Quilts' b.o.w. quilt 'Rest and Refreshing.' It's a beautiful design. Sign up if you want a bit of a traditional challenge, the link is above.

The backing to my 'coins' small quilt, 20' x 16', is done today. I made up more 'saw teeth' for it and check out that butterfly in the purple strip on the left, 'Mariposa Meadow' fabric, by Elizabeth Isles. Lovely.
