Also blooming are Camellia shrubs, Crocus and Hellebore, etc. It is colorful and exciting.

This last week I finished up the top of my Bramble Blooms l QAL project. I call it Three Coneflowers Medallion with Borders. I wanted to keep the outside border dark to contrast with the light border preceding it. I had a difficult time trying to decide how complicated to piece that final border. But finally inspired by Linda at kokaquilts and her housetop logcabin quilts, because they look so fun! I realized that the BBl qal project just had to get finished so I could move onto something else! I tried new techniques (raw edge machine applique) and got some good tips from Audrey at quiltyfolk. Thank you Audrey.

Now did someone say Log Cabin blocks in housetop formation? This one will be a gift.

Then I bravely pulled out my quilt top Barn Raising Medallion with Borders, started about 5 yr.s ago. I was studying Gwen Marston's books Liberated Quiltmaking ll and Liberated Medallion Quilts, published by AQS, and working on 1/2 square triangles and borders. Borders add lots of color and design interest right? I measured/cut out batting and pieced a backing for my Barn Raising Medallion quilt top last week. Next will be pin basting and starting on hand quilting.

Then after all the hard work, I was ready for relaxation and inspiration, which I found in abundance at Linda's Koka Quilts. I braved a walk to the mail box and was very careful to avoid the slippery spots. I made it back safely. It was good to get out for a walk. Last post I said I was glad that there had been no snow yet. Well now there has been snow and frozen rain plus wind, but as I said it's now warming up and thawing a little. I'm thankful.

And I've finished my Rice Bag project. I wanted to make one up so I researched different patterns and tutorials. I decided the first one was going to be small because I wanted to hand stitch it. I did stitch most of the seams by hand but finished around the top and tabs with machine because I figured they would get more wear and I think machine stitching is a bit sturdier. I used scraps and improv piecing for the sides and used Sashiko Stitches for embellishment. Fun project, I will make more in different sizes. Jean Wells has interesting tutorials on her rice bag pattern and it's worth a watch!

My Red Amaryllis now has four blooms open and what a treat to see on a dark stormy morning. They will grow and thrive out in the yard in a protected spot (from the heat) in S CA. As my daughter-in-law said, "O those, my dad grows those in his back yard." Wonderful for him. Here in the PNW the bulbs have to brought in for the winter of course.

My Improv Log Cabin in Furrow Formation, 42" x 42" is done! I finished the binding last week. I was inspired by Temecula Quilt Co.'s quilt pattern Down Home Darling. And that quilt was inspired by a vintage quilt Sheryl Johnson, owner of Temecula Quilt Co. found. My blocks were a different size than the blocks in Down Home Darling and I made the starting red square different sizes to add challenge and interest in piecing, thus the 'improv'. Life can be tough at times, if anyone tells you different they are lying.

I have decided on a color theme for the start of this year and it centers around my half yard solids by Tula Pink. Tula's way with color is energizing and speaks right to my heart.

I took some time to piece additions to my Improv Log Cabin blocks, 12 of them and they will all soon measure 11" square each. I'm still debating whether to add borders. If I do add borders they will be wonky/improv style. These blocks were inspired by the book by Mary Hogan, Log Cabin Improv Quilts with a Twist on Tradition. Mary's book is full of great ideas, tutorials and color choices.

And I have made design choices on my Applique Center Medallion Challenge project. But some small decisions have been made, that's what I tell myself.

That is the quilt news from the valley where we've had rain and no snow yet, and I am thankful. I also snapped up a few solids to mix with my stash for adding pizzaz to the borders of my new Medallion Sunflower Quilt I envisioned right there! Fall colors are my inspiration.

Also last week I found time to add two red violet strips to the borders of one of my Hot Mat projects. I'm piecing several at the same time for holiday gifts.

Audrey at Quilty Folk is hosting Bramble Blooms QAL. I'm in! She emphasized the relaxed spirit of the QAL so that sounded like a winner. I pieced the applique center with 'obscure' neutral fabrics from my stash. Maybe I should have pieced it a little more wonky but I used my ruler and it will have to do. See, here I am over thinking it already. Next will be designing the flowers to be appliqued.

And the dogwood tree in the backyard looks so gorgeous in fall colors I had to share a photo of it. It measures about 44" x 12.5". I was inspired to make Wonky Squares in Purple by Debbie @ aquilterstable when she posted about one of her Bee Sewcial challenges called Albersesque. The challenge called for designing quilt blocks with the artwork of Josef Albers in mind.

My Sashiko/Boro bookbag also got finished up and it's just perfect for transporting books to and from the library, very useful. I used some trimmed scrap corners from one of my quilt projects, they were too colorful to just throw out, and I boro/sashiko stitched them down on the front. The back is just as beautiful with a pocket done in rice stitch. The pattern is from one of my many Sashiko project books.

#4 in My Liberated Small Quilt Series has its final border pieced on. I think fall colors have influenced my color choices because I see a lot of orange, yellow and green in that quilt.

And that is the quilt news from the compound.

I hope you're breathing in the fresh fall air and enjoying the color like I am.

I'll be by to visit!

Janiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11494933770754796059noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1734121503010835867.post-68355583949356984372023-09-29T08:39:00.002-07:002023-09-30T20:03:14.610-07:00Quilt News! Many quilters prefer to use the word wonky or liberated instead of improv and I can understand that. Some improv quilters have made improv to be a very complicated process maybe because they are trying to sell their book as well as their particular method of improv.

Which is just fine but it can add a little confusion.

Gwen Marston in her books, Liberated Quiltmaking ll and Liberated Medallion Quilts, both published by American Quilters Society, cuts through the fog and explains that liberated quilt making has actually been going on for a long time and it's not as difficult as you might be led to believe. Gwen left us with many excellent quilts and books to document her thinking and we are all indebted to her. Thank you Gwen.

Also visit Audrey to see her fabulous liberated piecing projects. I enjoy the seeing the pumpkins and squash at the local markets and farmer's markets. Our family's fall birthdays are coming right up too.

This week I'm working on hand quilting my Log Cabin Improv quilt. I'm using Cotton Pearl #8 in Topaz. And in my last post I wrote that I was going to hand baste it but I did not! I pin basted it and that works out fine too.

I'm starting to piece together new Improv Saw Tooth borders for my small quilt mug rugs and table/kitchen mats as you see in the brief tutorial above. I'll have them finished for gifts for the holidays soon. I think they'll be colorful and useful.

And I finished my Zinnia needle point project. Needle Point is like a color puzzle to me and I enjoy the challenge. I think mindset has everything to do with hand work. I'll block it and tack it to a 5 x 5" frame. I don't put my pieces under glass, just preference.

And that is the news from the valley where soon fall colors will blaze the landscape.

What fall projects are you working on? As you may know textile art is one of my fascinations. They work well together. The fact that it's useful is a big plus with me.

And another new, useful project is my book/shopping bag, it will measure approx. 18" x 17". I had some leftover triangle pieces trimmed off another project and they were too colorful to throw out so I'm stitching them onto the front piece with boro stitches which is also called Japanese Running Stitch. One of my favorite books on Boro is by Harumi Horiuchi, Mending with Boro, Japanese Running Stitch & Patching Techniques. Harumi's book is beautiful and she writes about stitching and mending with your own unique style as an art form. Yes to that!

My new Scrappy Log Cabin/Court House Steps Improv Blocks are going to be about 10" square, most of them are there now. I'm deciding on the final layout. I do seem to favor log cabin blocks, I know. Mary Hogan's book, Log Cabin Improv: Quilts with a Twist on Tradition, has been a great inspiration for me.

That Quilt Friends is the news from my sewing room to yours. Summer officially starts this month. The birds are already there.

This week I finished piecing the backing for my Log Cabin Improv quilt top in Furrow Variation and cut out the batting. Now on to basting them together for hand quilting. It will measure 44" x 44".

Speaking about hand quilting I found a great book at my library, Quilting by Hand by Riane Elise from Quadrille Publishing 2021. It's a classic with clear instruction on piecing and hand quilting designs. It's a beauty in every way.

Just today I finished piecing the last five Four Patch in a Square blocks to make 56 blocks in all. The blocks will measure 6.5 square when trimmed and the top will measure 42" x 48". I haven't decided to add a border yet, must think about it....

And the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show is coming right up, second Saturday in July. Will you be there? I'm thinking that I might like to go, now to talk my driver into it!

And that is the news from the valley where progress is being made and I might be out of town soon, viewing volcanoes and quilts. There's a good coffee shop in Sisters too I remember.

Hope you're making plans for vacationing and making progress on your projects.

I'll be by to visit.

Janiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11494933770754796059noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1734121503010835867.post-78926024147152073412023-06-12T14:05:00.000-07:002023-06-12T14:05:12.873-07:00Quilt News! I added buttons and ribbon for closing my pouch.

Hello Quilt Friends, Happy June! This is the month where summer kicks in and Swallowtail Butterflies are everywhere. Roses are blooming and wild rabbits are enjoying the warm weather here in the valley.

This last week I sewed the binding on my #1 Hourglass Medallion Quilt with Sawtooth borders. I made 2 small quilts to work on piecing sawtooth borders using Mary Hogan's technique in her excellent book, Improv Log Cabin Quilts. I enjoyed the process and highly recommend her book.

I pulled out my Log Cabin Improv Quilt top from the closet and unpicked the previous borders I had sewed on. The borders were the wrong color and did not work for me. The new borders fit with the colors in the blocks and are a better width. So I have cut the batting and backing to fit and onto getting it quilted. I was inspired by Temecula Quilt Co.'s Down Home Darling design. I didn't follow the design perfectly but used my own colors and made the centers 2 different sizes instead of just one size. I figured that would add interest and it did! Temecula Quilt Co is full of color and design ideas.

My Sashiko projects are fun for me, I like the stitching process. I embroider traditional style and I have been big stitch hand quilting, Sashiko fits right in with those. The emphasis on Sashiko/Boro stitches is practical and of course looking beautiful at the same time. I get that! I finished my sashiko stitched pouch with mother of pearl buttons and a silk ribbon to tie closed.

Last week we drove to Kanasket State Park to see the wilderness and Cedar River up close. The Swallowtail butterflies were making a good appearance and loved the bushes along the river in bloom. The wild roses were also blooming, fabulous.

And that is the quilt news, what spring/summer delights are you enjoying? What are you working on?

I'll be by to visit.

Janiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11494933770754796059noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1734121503010835867.post-20813222838771708562023-05-30T13:50:00.001-07:002023-05-31T11:22:45.958-07:00Quilt News! We've been walking by the lake and enjoying the burst of blossoms and new green.

This last week I finished up big stitch hand quilting my #1 Hourglass Medallion Quilt with Sawtooth Borders, 30" x 30". I hand quilted it using #8 perle cotton. Now onto the binding then it's done.

I have other projects I'm currently working on and I do read a lot of books on textile art, quilting and history. And with daily walks there is always something going on, that's why my projects don't get done super fast.

Also I have to add, I just read a super interesting book, Fabric The Hidden History of the Material World by Victoria Finley. History and Fabric, a fascinating read! I couldn't put it down until I was finished.

My first Pineapple block has progressed and I like it. Pineapple blocks devour a lot of scraps which is a good thing. It also takes practice to get comfortable with Improv Pineapple block piecing. Mary Hogan's book Log Cabin Improv Quilts has excellent tutorials on Pineapple Block quilts.

And that Quilt Friends is the news from the valley. I hope you're enjoying spring blossoms and reading some good books. What's your favorite blossom this time of year? April showers bring May flowers the saying goes...

What's on your sewing table? My sewing table has some finished and some in progress projects on it. And also a Peter Rabbit children's book, great colors and to celebrate spring.

I finished piecing into a sampler my Sawtooth border scraps left overs from my finished quilt top, Mostly Green. Big stitch quilting and binding in Kona Zucchini made it a done deal.

Then I finished stitching my Sashiko project, a small wallet/purse in pink linen, lined with a silky Liberty fabric, stitched in rice stitch using #8 perle cotton in indigo blue. I'm still deciding how I want it to close, maybe with a ribbon or buttons. I found the inspiration in one of my library books written by Karen Kim Matsunaga, Japanese Country Quilting; Sashiko Patterns, published 2012. Amazon is selling her book at a high price, that's why I check it out from my library. I wish it would go into reprint then the price would probably come down.

And why do I think Karen's book Japanese Country Quilting is one of the best for Sashiko? Because Karen is Japanese and writes an excellent history/background of Sashiko and Japanese design. There is a well known European author on Sashiko and her ideas and methods are fine for what she is trying to do, but I feel she doesn't address the very important soul of the art.

Then I decided to make a runner out of the four 9" Log Cabin blocks made from being inspired by Debbie Jeske's post and challenge of 'Albersesque' blocks. Her idea of course was inspired by Josef Albers, an influencial modern artist specializing in the relativity of color. And so my runner top is finished.

My FourPatch in a Square blocks, scrappy, now total 38. My inspiration is from Beth Shibley's YouTube video, Four Ways to Finish FourPatch Blocks. Beth has good ideas.

Susie @ Susies-Scraps has a great idea and tutorial in her last post, Scrappy Pineapple Blocks.

I'm ready to dive into another project! Oh wait! I have to sit down and plan it out in my notebook first.

When I take the time to do that the project suddenly becomes doable; just a little planning really helps.

And that Quilt Friends is the quilt news from the valley.

I'll be by to visit.

Janiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11494933770754796059noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1734121503010835867.post-18346576372075649522023-04-05T12:38:00.001-07:002023-05-31T11:22:06.605-07:00Quilt News! One of the ideas he had was that color is relative, he used geometric shapes to show his ideas. Well I got inspired to whip up a couple of blocks 9.5" square in the liberated style, showing how colors can look as though they are receding or advancing. I'm not sure where that will lead but I'm considering the possibilities.

Hand quilting progress is moving forward. Like Audrey at Quilty Folk says it is important to hand quilt regular if you're going to commit to it, because then your hand stays supple and in shape. Why two? you might be thinking. Because I was on a roll and I wanted to use slightly different colors and it's fun working a series when you're inspired.

And more Four-patch in a Square blocks have been pieced, coral, turquoise and yellow are a match made in heaven. I was inspired to set my Four-Patch blocks in a square by watching Beth Shibley's tutorial on Four Ways to finish a Four-Patch Block.

Also got around to washing and pressing with a hot iron my stack of 10" square red batiks. I usually don't pre-wash any fabric but red batiks are known to lose color 'all over town.' Red is a good color to have on hand because it can be tucked in among other colors to add a sense of direction.

That's the quilt news from the valley, where spring rains and blossoms are showering us.

What spring projects have you started and Easter is almost here already! Do you believe it?

I'll be by to visit.

Janiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11494933770754796059noreply@blogger.com3
