Hello Quilt friends, Quilt News from the Pacific NW, where it's cold!

 

After a great road trip, driving through Nor Cal, Oregon and into Washington, here we are visiting grandkids and their 'caretakers.'

We have a view of Lake Washington and fishermen in boats when the sun is out.

No big projects but some time for small hand work. For my little art quilt, RagTag, I used only scissors and hand pieced and embroidered it. It's named RagTag because it is made from scraps and I'm going through a time when things feel a bit Ragtag and scrappy with alot of making do going on.

Life is like that sometimes, right?

When I thought about writing this post I knew I had to include lots of orange, yellow and blue because they are warm cheerful colors and lots of my past projects have those colors in them. Also soon I will start the piecing process for my AHIQ color challenge quilt and I have chosen orange, yellow and blue! I have many pieces and blocks in my 'parts department' maybe it will be a sampler style quilt.

And the photo of the Spotted Towhee, notice the orange under its wing and the spots on its wing? The light wasn't great but the spots came through. I love bird watching. Walking through winter gardens and parks here there are a lot of birds; chickadees, finch, sparrows, nuthatch, naming only a few, and quiet winter colors to enjoy.

And that Quilt Friends is the news from the cold north.

We'll be here for a few more weeks, and I'll get some hand stitching done. Mostly enjoying grandkids of course!

We have a lot to be thankful for don't we?

Quilt News! and Happy New Year!

My color calendar color of the month is white and I posted the photo of my white Amaryllis blooming, to celebrate, a stunning example of the color white!

I finally pieced the black and white stripped border onto my Red and Blue 4 Medallion quilt top, it's 60" x 60" and finished. I started it a couple of years ago just experimenting with the center medallions not knowing exactly what I was going to do with them.

The thread catcher I'm going to give as a gift is finished. I hand stitched the top binding down for effect.

Over the holiday we drove up to Joseph Grant Park in the Diablo Range Foothills, and hiked around. It used to be a privately owned ranch. Several years ago when we lived in Washington State we actually met one of Joseph Grants' descendants, living then in Washington.

In view of celebrating red I worked on my 4 Medallion Quilt and got it pieced together finally this week.

Two medallions red and two blue, I think blue and red work together well.

(When I say medallion I'm using it to describe the design process, beginning with a center square and working out from there with borders ) As a challenge to myself, I started with the small center squares to see where the process would go.

At first I wasn't sure if I would put the red and blue blocks together.

All four were variations of a theme, 2 red and 2 blue medallion blocks, that made a good statement, together they went!

More Log Cabin blocks have been pieced and added to the growing stack. Visit Temecula Quilt Co. where they have a QAL in progress, Down Home Darling, using Log Cabin blocks, one of my favorites.

I'm working at my own speed but getting lots of inspiration from Temecula Quilt Co.!

That's the quilt news where it's beginning to look a lot like Christmas ( for around here )

and we are remembering to be thankful.
