"Liberated' Log Cabin Four Patch, Gwen Marston's 'Liberated Quilt Making II'

My 'Liberated' log cabin four patch ready for hand quilting.

Butterick 8P282 makes a cute doll coat.

Gwen Marston's 'Liberated Quiltmaking II', always a great reference.

Happy almost Easter!
And it's spring!

I'm getting ready for a road trip north, family business. I'll take 'Liberated Quilt Making II'
for reading during down times. Gwen has a great eye for color and design, and true insight into the heart of what making a quilt is all about. All that without being pretentious.

I finished the doll coat, Butterick pattern 8P282. I first learned to sew with garment construction and I still like the challenge. I watch You Tube tutorials on garment construction for fun, not everybody does that.

My 'liberated' log cabin four patch is ready for hand quilting. I'm practicing stitches getting my hand limbered up, that does make a difference.

That's my 'What's up Wednesday' report.
Have a great day!

I'm linking up with Kaja @ Sew Slowly AHIQ,
check out the amazing improv quilts.

  1. That is one lucky doll! Great spring coat. Wasn't it fiddly to sew something so small? I used to struggle with Barbie's clothes when I was a kid.
The quilt will love being quilted by you! Have a good trip and enjoy Easter.

  2. I love the doll coat and will borrow the idea of practising particular skills on something this small first (I'd quite like a coat like that for me!) Your quilt is so pretty already but I can't wait to see what it will look like once you've worked your hand-stitching magic on it. Enjoy your trip - and your reading!

  3. Gwen is a great source of inspiration. What type of thread will you be using to hand quilt your liberated four patch? The doll coat is so sweet! My mom use to make all kinds of clothes for our knockoff Barbie dolls and I wish I still had them. I grew up learning to garment sew and still make myself something once in awhile. Thanks for you comment on my AC/DC project. I got another t-shirt in the mail yesterday so I am getting closer to being able to start the construction. I have made 14 t-shirts quilts so far in styles ranging from sashed to improvisational. If you have any questions or get stuck on something feel free to email me. I would be happy to help! pattynubs at gmail dot com

  4. That's a good book to reread. You've made a lovely log cabin. I like the improvisational ones so much. Enjoy the hand stitching on your travels. Thanks for linking up with AHIQ.

  5. I love your log cabin version. Though I am already familiar with her work I really should try to lay my hands on one of Gwen Marston's books, they look great.
Thanks also for commenting on my blog post, I could not send an email reply since you come up as a no-reply blogger...

    1. Thank you! I'm sorry about the 'no reply' I thought I had that cleared up.
If you have to have one of Gwen's books I think 'Liberated Quiltmaking II is the best. She has a couple of books with Freddy Moran that are also good color and improv design inspirations.

  6. Must see if our local library can get a copy of this book - it looks wonderful. Have a safe trip.

  7. I like the idea of using 4Ps for the centers. I might have to try that since I have a bucket load of 4Ps and scrap strings just waiting for something to happen.

Cute doll coat. I haven't made doll clothes in a long time! My 40 yr old dau still has all the Barbie clothes I made.

    1. Thank you, Cathy, making doll clothes is habit forming.
Good luck using your 4P's and scrap strings.
