Back in Stormy L.A. Small 'Liberated' Modern Quilt Project

Rancho Palos Verdes, looking toward Catalina Island; Pacific Ocean.

My 'improv' project for AHIQ, lots of 'liberated' fun.

My oldest 'grand muffin' last fall, I miss her terribly.

Hello from stormy L.A..
We're back on the west coast just in time for lots of wind and rain.
We're staying in Rancho Palos Verdes just over the coast hills west of Torrance.
It was very difficult to leave the grand muffins.

Before leaving New Hampshire I had time to sew 'liberated' borders on my 'improv' quilt. I'm using a great idea from Corinne Sovey who makes stunning geometric modern type quilts. She is putting on a webinar, 'Using Simple Quilt Blocks to Create a Complex Geometric Design', through the Modern Quilt Guild , which I am a member of. I'm registered for that webinar, it's tomorrow; I'm excited.

I'm linking up with Ann and Kaja for the AHIQ, promoting improvisation, which is just plain fun.

Here's to learning new things and keeping dry.
I'll be by to visit!

  1. Hi, found you on AHIQ, which I've started linking with. I like your way of turning standard, blocks into an improv version. You have an adventurous use of color. Keep up the good work! Btw, I'm from RI ages ago, visited Hampton Beach. Moving to the West Coast, the Pacific was on the wrong side for ages. Now in Wisconsin, I miss salt water.

    1. Thank you, Maureen. The wind has calmed down and the sun is out today, relief.

  3. Grand muffins: such an adorable name for these cuties. I like the change of scale on the borders, but repeating fabrics from the interior. It opens the quilt and adds movement. It's spinning rather than enclosed.
Oh, they need the rain in California but so sorry you got hit with it. OTOH you're missing some storms in NH.
    Thanks for linking with AHIQ.

    1. Thanks for your comments, Ann.
I 'face timed' my daughter in New Hampshire and saw the snow coming down. They're pretty tough over there and know
how to live with snow, I admire that.

  4. Oh, I feel for you being so far from your grand muffins! What fun borders on your quilt! I really like how the tilt changes the look of the quilt. It was playful already, but now it's dancing.

  5. Great borders - I agree with Ann that you have achieved a great sense of movement. I like how the strong pink border balances those paler yellow strips in the centre too.

  6. Is it nice to be back on the West coast or do you miss the muffins enough to go heading back there?
Is the liberated fun ready for sandwiching, basting and binding or are you going to add a border?

    1. I'm still considering both, adding more on and going back, yes, Queenie.

  7. Oh how I identify with not wanting to leave your grandbabies! I can't live now without Skype, but it's not the same as real live contact. And yes, definitely 'liberated fun'!!

  8. your oldest ''little one'' is so pretty and she looks so happy. I can understand that you miss her and the others. The view in the first image is amazing...especially as it's grey, cold and wet here in deepest Lancashire!!
