Pacific Blues #1 needed a couple of 'star fish' and some mother of pearl pieces sewed on, I decided.
I want to have 3 in this series to show the moods of the Pacific Ocean. Of course the many moods of that ocean are endless but I figure three, one for relative calm and bright, one for darker, moody and restless and three for a late summer sunset. That will keep me busy for a while.
I've taken some of the blocks I have sewn together going through Gwen Marston's book, Liberated Quiltmaking II, and laid them out on a piece of fabric I'm using as a 'design wall'. I'm going to use that fabric for sashing and flying geese borders. I wanted to get a feel for how the blocks could go together and what I might want to add to fill it out. So this is my progress on improv projects so far.
I get a lot of encouragement and inspiration from all of you other improv designers/quilters at

Long live the challenge!
Hi Janie, I'd love to follow you and do prefer the option to have your posts come directly to my inbox. Could I ask that you include this option found in layout in your blogger dashboard. Plus, I'm going to include your blog in my fav's on my blog.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, your improv is looking really great, love it!
I so like your Pacific Blues! Three is a good number. Love the embroidery you're adding. It reminds me of so work by Lisa Boni (Ivory Blush Roses.) The yellow lapping over the blue in your first photo is especially attractive. Thanks for linking up with AHIQ. See you soon, I hope.
ReplyDeleteLiberated is looking good!
ReplyDeleteI like the sampler style arrangement of blocks
ReplyDeletenice! Love the hand work. LeeAnna
ReplyDeleteI really like the direction you're going with these pieces Janie. Who knows - your Pacific series might just morph into more!
ReplyDeleteI like the idea of a third Pacific piece. Your improv sampler blocks look good and the 9 patch sets somehow pull everything together - very effective. I love flying geese so can't wait to see those added in.
ReplyDeleteI was captivated by the Pacific ocean on my recent trip...the blue was so deep. You have captured the vibrancy of that perfectly here Janie
ReplyDeleteLooking good! It's very unusual to see embroidery embellishing patchwork and quilting in this way - that in itself is going to make your work recognisable as *you* and no one else :) I look forward to seeing your 'liberated blocks' grow, they've got such a 'twinkly' feel about them that seems to be more 'animated' because of the liberated way you've pieced them.
ReplyDeleteGreat to see your colour interpretations of the Pacific, and I love your Gwen Marston inspired blocks!
ReplyDeleteI love those little bits of hand stitching on Pacific Blues! It has a wonderful feel to it. Your liberated blocks are looking promising too!
