'Quilt as You Go' Thread Catcher Finish, Deer Family Visit

My thread catcher, finished at 5" x 4 1/2" sq.

Bottom view of thread catcher/quilted basket.

This can hold a lot of thread and scraps.

A jelly-roll fits perfect inside.

The fawn, who's getting bigger, visited this morning.

Fawn turning back to follow mom.

Happy Friday/weekend!!
From the Pacific NW, Renton WA, where the wind is up and clouds are blowing in.
A lot of trees on our street are turning yellow gold, very beautiful.

I finished my 'Quilt as you go' thread catcher. I found the free tutorial on The Sewing Chick.
I used Robert Kaufman's Essex Linen, batiks and a print for the lining.
Some of the measurements weren't accurate or clear. But if you look at the tutorial photos and read the directions first to get an idea of what you're trying to do then you can work it out as you go.
It also helps if you are comfortable with improvising. Can't really complain though the tutorial is free after all!
And it made up into a good sized thread catcher/quilted basket. My husband said he'll take it to keep his desk odds and ends in, my grandson would like to keep his toys in it. So it's popular, I'll make more.

We had a visit from a local doe and her fawn, they were after what's left of the tomato plants.
The fawn was curious and let me get close. The doe was of course more cautious and 'told' the fawn it was time to high tail it out.

That's the news from the shire.

Share a smile!
I'll be by to visit.

  1. Great finish! I can see how it could be used for more than catching threads. I'll have to check out the tutorial.

  2. That is a nice size for catching thread, or keeping jelly rolls, desk odds 'n ends or indeed small toys.
It is sturdy enough to stand up, but can be collapsed or squeezed into a bag when you go to workshops. The batik shines!

  3. I might have to try one of those thread catchers. Thanks for the tutorial link. I have all sorts of odds and ends to throw in there...a new junk drawer! I spy a butterfly inside yours!

I sure don't like seeing deer around here. They eat my roses and fruit trees! I see them right out back in the early morning deciding on their menu for the day. They are VERY prolific around here - I see groups of four or five at a time and I have to remind the grandkids that the bucks can be dangerous and attack during rutting season.

    1. Sounds like they are plotting a deer 'take over' around your garden! They get brave.

  4. My thread catcher normally seems to end up being the floor and my DH (in charge of the vacuum) gives me trouble about it all the time as he unbungs the beater bar in the vac. Good idea to have something on hand to actually serve the purpose, rather than hurling it in the general direction of the garbage and hoping for the best. What a sweet little fawn...lucky you to see it.

    1. That's a funny story, Mary Ann, about your thread catcher ending up caught in the vacuum.
      Have a good day!

  5. I like how your thread catcher turned out and, like your family, can think of lots of uses for it. Your batiks really shine against the more muted Essex linen - great contrast.
