Spring Fling, Improv Experiment

Ornamental cherry trees blossoming at the pool.

Closer view to lift your spirits.

Experimenting with improv. blocks.

I'll border this with 1 1/2" gray then a wider border of muslin.

Monday, happy Monday!
The birds are insisting it's spring around here. The hawthorns, crabapples and ornamental cherries are making a big push for spring too. Excitement is in the air.

I've been putting together a small quilt to see the possibilities of the improv. block I decided on. I used scissors for most of the cutting and I liked using them. When I first started sewing and quilting there were no rotary cutters or mats. We all used scissors and it worked out fine. This little quilt will have a 1 1/2" border of gray and a wider muslin border, the binding will be the yellow  fabric I used in the blocks.
Speaking of excitement, Barbara Brackman's, Civil War Quilts blog
is full of great ideas, quilts and fun bits of history, check it out!

I'm linking up with Sew Slowly AHIQ #6 .

Oh -those trees - so beautiful!! We're hunkering down for a storm due to arrive tomorrow and fingers are crossed that it will see fit to pass us by. I've never worked with orange to speak of but seeing your project here makes me think I might like to.

Until your mentioned it, I'd forgotten I made quilts with scissors only all those years ago. You're right; we all did just fin. I'm glad to be relearning their use again.

I wish we had such beautiful cherry trees in bloom. I guess I'll have to wait for the azalea to bloom. (It won't be long.)
Your piece is gorgeous. Those colors work so well together.

Yes, using scissors has a good feel, some people call it organic, I agree.

I want to make a quilt using only scissors too. This one is great! Such fun and happy colors.:)

Looks like a successful experiment!

Yes, I remember those days w/o rotary cutters, rulers and mats. I, personally, don't want to go back to just scissors unless the pieces are complex and have a weird template.

Yes, Cathy, rotary cutters and mats are great. I wanted to use scissors because of the small pieces I wanted to work with and I was sewing then cutting then sewing. I didn't want to get up and down and scoot over so much. So I used scissors and it was faster.
